Vermont Exemplary Sign

Randy Weiss sent this mathematicaly significant roadsign in with the headling “This one is a corker!” He certainly wasn’t kidding. This stack of signs seems to go on forever with numbers peppered in all directions and means. Miles, hours, junction numbers. It’s a hootenany of a sign!

The math on this sign is stunning. I haven’t checked for sure, but I’m almost positive there are more numbers on this sign than any other sign ever submitted. And the elegance of it all! It comes together with only one operator, the most simplest of addition. Bravissimo!

41 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 24 + 10 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 2+ 2 + 2

Math Student Tip from Randy: There are two odd numbers that have to be made to cancel somehow. If there had been an odd number of odd numbers then the solution would have required multiplication somewhere.

This sign greets all who exit I-89 eastbound at US-4. The GPS coordinates are approximately N43 39 44.9 W72 23 11.2. See sign on map!

    I-89 runs north-south, not east-west

I’m sure he meant as you get off I-89 and HEAD east on US-4. Should have read "…all who exit I-89 HEADING eastbound ON US-4

Another possible solution (though not as simple as the original) could be:

    (41+24+3+2+10)/4 + 4 = 4*2 + 2 + 4
