Road Sign Math newcomer Frank Solensky gives us a perfect example of the gantry rule (#2). This large gantry spanning the freeway gives a variety of directions, but also some great mathematical possibilities.

Mr. Solensky thought he had a very nice, elegant solution to this sign and then he noticed the 35 sitting on the right side. Not one to be deterred quickly, he sat down to do some more serious math.

59 + 2 - \log \Bigl({{60}\over{\sqrt{35 + 1}}}\Bigl)=60

This sign is found on Route 2 eastbound in Massachusetts. The GPS coordinates are approximately N42 24 31.1 W71 10 22.8. See sign on map!

WOW! I also photographed this sign this very morning (the day it was posted here). I also didn’t notice the "35" till I looked at the pic in the camera. I didn’t have time to solve the problem. Great Solution!!!
