A few days ago, Road Sign Math received a sign submission from a new player in Georgia. However, the sign submitted violated the fraction rule of the game, and the submitter was notified that their hopeful win was actually disqualified, and encouraged to continue to search for winning signs. A few hours later we received this heartfelt plea (spelling errors left in place).

Dear Road Sign Administrator,

I recently sent in a sign that was invlaid. I did the project as an extra credit, because i recently did not do well on a testand my grade is suffering. I was unaware of the fraction rule because our teacher did not explain it completely.  In order for me to recieve any type of credit I must have an email stating it was accepted and it must be posted for a little while. I am asking out of the kindness of your heart if  you could please help me out and post it.

God Bless,

name removed (Brookstone School)

This email plucked at our heart strings. Here is the sign that was submitted.

This students plea made the team here at Road Sign Math consider, for a moment, some tricky ways that we could allow this students sign in, and help him out. We didn’t want the future success of this upstanding math enthusiast ruined by our commitment to the rules. But then the 3 showed up. It was clear that this sign could not be included with all the amazing mathematically significant signs highlighted here. Clearly the fraction rule was violated, but more importantly the 3 on the top of the sign meant the math didn’t even add up.

We have received several emails from teachers in a variety of schools around the country. I know that the exact extra credit assignment this student was given, has been given out dozens of times, but this is the first submission we’ve received. I so badly wish we could accept it, but we cannot.

And finally we get to the point of this note. If you are a teacher and are using Road Sign Math as an extra credit assignment, please take the time to brief your students on the rules of Road Sign Math. Don’t put the fate and hopes of all these young children on our doorstep. Thank you!

And always remember,

driving + math = fun
